Overview

The ID Physician provides specialized medical care for patients with acute and chronic infectious diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role involves acting as a consultant to other medical specialties, leading infection prevention initiatives, and overseeing antimicrobial stewardship programs to combat drug resistance.

Responsibilities

Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment: Evaluate complex medical histories and perform physical exams to diagnose rare or resistant infections like HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, and MRSA.

Specialized Consultation: Provide expert advice to hospitalists and surgeons on managing post-operative infections, sepsis, and fevers of unknown origin.

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Lead efforts to ensure the appropriate use of antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals to optimize patient outcomes and reduce the spread of resistant organisms.

Infection Control: Collaborate with hospital leadership to develop protocols for preventing healthcare-associated infections and managing potential outbreaks.

Outpatient Management: Manage long-term care for chronic conditions, provide travel medicine consultations (including vaccinations), and oversee infusion therapy.

Public Health Collaboration: Report communicable diseases to local and state health departments (such as the CDC) and participate in community health initiatives.

Qualifications

Licensure: Current, unrestricted medical license in the practicing state.

Certification: Board Certification or Eligibility in Infectious Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or equivalent.

Competencies Skills

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent communication for patient education, and proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.

Credentials

Education

Education: Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.

Training: Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency followed by a 2-3 year Infectious Disease fellowship.
